FAQ

Below are answers to the questions I get asked the most. Hope you find this helpful!

Q. CAN YOU ADDRESS MY…

I would love to, but I am currently focusing on other projects and am unable to commit to any addressing jobs. Chin up, though! There are lots of super talented calligraphers out there that will do an excellent job for you!

Q: I FOUND THIS ON O HOLY NIGHT CANVAS ON Pinterest. IS IT FOR SALE?

YES! CLICK HERE!

Q: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN DOING EVENT STATIONERY & SIGNAGE?
I majored in graphic design in college. When my beautiful, unique, wonderful friends started getting engaged, I was pretty unimpressed with what they were sharing with me in the way of their choices for wedding paper goods. It seemed the options were either super generic {pick your font and color} or super expensive. Not okay. So much thought and detail goes into planning any event. I believe the invitation and event stationery deserve just as much detail and consideration. So, I took maters into my own hands and I’ve never looked back!

Q: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED DOING CALLIGRAPHY?
First off, I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a calligrapher. More if an illustrator who primarily illustrates text. However, I did receive my initial training in traditional calligraphy. My mom enrolled me in a calligraphy class in a summer program when I was in 5th grade. I thought it was pretty cool, but all it really meant for me was that I ended up lettering the certificates for everything important that ever happened to me from that point forward… my whole 6th grade class graduation certificates… all the 1st communion certificates… and then there was confirmation certificates… {I did batches of these for probably 7ish years… one year I spelled “Lutheran” wrong and had to re-do about 30 of them. Hey, I was like, ten…}. It wasn’t until after college that I really, really began to enjoy calligraphy and lettering as a passion. When I started designing wedding invitations, I would BEG my friends to let me address their invitations for them so they didn’t mess them up my beautiful designs with their potentially messy handwriting! The outside of the envelope is so important because it’s the VERY first impression. The more I addressed, the more I realized that I actually enjoyed that part of the invitation process sometimes even more than designing. And that’s when I began to play with the calligraphy I’d learned as a little girl and to develop my style to make it mine. I like it when things look a little less than perfect–a little quirky, a little mix of modern and vintage all at the same time. I try to emulate that emotion in my calligraphy–fancyish, but really approachable.

Q: WHAT KINDS OF PENS DO YOU USE?

My favorite pen for every day is LePen (available here: SHOP!) For calligraphy, I use traditional dip pens with a variety of tips and Speedball or Bombay India Ink {and I play around with mixing my own colors}. From time to time, I will also use gel pens, thin illustration markers, and Micron pens if they feel right for the specific project. If you’re interested in trying calligraphy for yourself, just head to your local craft store and pick up a starter kit. You could purchase one that has some ink included, or try a pack that has a variety of nibs {pen tips} so you can get a feel for what you like best. After that, it’s basically just trial and error. If you’re new to lettering entirely, I would purchase some varying weights of microns and start there. If you’re not so hot at lettering, a calligraphy pen will only make it worse, not better. I lettered for an entire decade before I ventured into the world of dip pens! Most importantly, it’s great to be inspired by other artist’s work, but do try to develop your own style. If you try to make your writing look like someone else’s writing, you’re only going to leave yourself feeling inadequate. Trust me. {And hey, if you can’t figure it out, I know a pretty good calligrapher if you’re in the market for one…} *To get started right this second, you can order some calligraphy pens and tips {here} and ink {here} both from Paper Source.*

Q: CAN YOU TEACH ME HOW TO DO CALLIGRAPHY?
No, but Melissa can. Check out her website and online class: istilllovecalligraphy.com

Q: WHAT IS YOUR ARTISTIC PROCESS?

I usually letter/sketch/paint/draw… depending on what the project entails. Then I scan the art into my Mac with my scanner {I use both an Epson and HP, depending on the project}. Then I use some combination of Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop in the Adobe Creative suite to add the graphic elements and move my illustrations and text around the way I’d like. I send PDF proofs via Adobe Acrobat Pro. After a design is approved, I print and embellish as I see fit. I really feel pretty strongly that anything I print should have some sort of embellishment on it–in a digital age, I think it’s comforting to receive something and to know that a human touched it. Sometimes I print myself, other times I send out the files for my clients to print. I use digital, offset, and letterpress printing… just depends on the project and the budget.

Q. WHERE DID THE ADDRESS STAMPS YOU USED TO SELL GO?
As much as I love creating address stamps that people love, I simply can’t keep up with the demand (and be a good mamma at the same time). But my friend Molly has some amazing ones!

Q: CAN I USE IMAGES FROM YOUR BLOG AND/OR WEBSITE?

Sure! Here are my housekeeping rules: All illustrations, designs, photos, hand-drawn lettering, and collages you see here are created by me unless otherwise specified. If you see something you like, you’re welcome to link to it or borrow it, just so long as you give Lindsay Letters the credit and include a link back to my site. Also, this is not a DIY website. Please don’t steal/copy my designs. Come up with your own beauty and share that. I know you have it in you!

Q. CAN YOU CREATE CUSTOM INVITATIONS FOR ME?

Wedding? Yes! I am THRILLED to announce my collaboration with Fig. 2 Design Studio that you can read about right here. As far as invitations for parties and other special events, even though the thought makes my heart go pitter patter, I have to say a regretful no for now. I’ve put my heart and soul into this little shop, and this is where I need to put my work time & energy. However, my super talented friend and graphic designer Sarah can create a masterpiece for you (she does branding & invites). If your looking for invites with pretty lettering, check out Courtnie at Poppy Pedals.

Q. HOW DID YOU CREATE YOUR BLOG/SHOP/WEBSITE?

I built my blog using WordPress.org, ProPhoto Blogs, blood, sweat, and tears. If you’re interested in creating your own blog, visit my friend Emily’s website: The Blog Class. As far as my website, a super talented team at Aeolidia did that!

Q: I’D LOVE TO GET STARTED DO WHAT YOU’RE DOING! ANY ADVICE?
I learned so, so, much from my internships and former career as a graphic designer. I’ve also learned so much from working along side people I love and admired. It’s hard for me to say how to go about your own crazy journey, because I’m just figuring it out as I go myself. My advice is pray hard, google your butt off, be nice to people, find local people you love to work with, and only produce work your’re proud of. Try to have people in your life that keep you accountable to the things you find most important, and drink lots and lots of coffee. Pray more. I know that’s not much help. My friend Laura at Making Brands Happen is WAY better at entrepreneurial encouragement. Check out her blog! I know you will leave inspired.

Bri - Just wanted to say that your designs are beautiful and inspiring. While I love the classic calligraphy, I always find myself adding my own touches here and there… I used to see them as mistakes but seeing your gorgeous samples makes me feel like those are what make my cards even better! :)

Linda - Do you have a “subscribe by email” button on your blog? Your handwriting is lovely!

Leslie Herr - Hi Lindsey,
I am making a proposal to GoldCorp, the mining company in my town of Red Lake Ontario for a Support Service System to be in place for families who are relocating within the mining industry. I am proposing this, with the intent that they see the value in a support system and hire me to fill that role! :) A very small part of that will be to have welcoming notes/ signs at the homes of new families who are arriving in town, along with fresh flowers, a meal coupon, etc… Another small part will be VIP Hospitality, with a small note of welcome in their hotel room along with a basket of small complimentary items when they arrive. I am passionate about this whole thing being top-notch professional. We would be serving families, as well as male and female executives.
I would love for you to design something in your spiffy way that shouts “EXTRA”. I don’t want to just use bought cards, nor something I would print off the computer.
What do you imagine? What is your cost for designing? The family ones could all be the same, and the executives ones could all be the same. I see the excutive ones as being the size of a file index card with something on it like: Welcome to Red Lake. We hope your stay is enjoyable and relaxing. (Or anything else more creative. :) )
For the families/couples that are coming: More of a note card that says Welcome on the front and inside it could say: Our Gold Corp Family is thrilled to have you join us in Red Lake.
The lettering would need to be professional looking. Gold Corp is a huge corporation, and our mine here is just a small part of them, though we are the largest producing gold mine in the world.
I would LOVE to have one of each to show the HR manager at my presentation meeting, which is not scheduled yet.
What would you charge to design? How much per note/card? and what time frame are we looking at? They would need to be sent via mail.

Let me know.
Cheers!
Leslie Herr

Holly H. - Hi, Lindsay. I found your site on Pinterest.com and the Pinner said that you offer calligraphy lessons? Unfortunately, I can’t find any reference to that or your location on this website. I HATE my handwriting and am definitely interested in calligraphy. Your work is lovely.

Carol - Hi Lindsay,

My name is Carol and I am currently a college student. I am very unsure of a major to choose and really never considered graphic design as an option. Your website has been the first to really spark an interest with me. I find myself doodling on ALL of my notes during lecture and thrive on finding new creative ways to letter. I go to a small college which doesn’t offer a lot of classes, but as I came across your site on pinterest, it mentioned something about calligraphy classes? I am very interested if you offer something like that, but I don’t see anywhere on your site that mentions that. Anyway, you are extremely talented. Thank you for inspiring me! I love your work–beautiful!

Teri Pennington - I just saw the canvas with your “O holy night…” on Holly Mathis Interiors site and I love it! She said you aren’t taking orders on it, but I want one as soon as you can take orders! Beautiful!!!

Lauren - I saw a post in pinterest of a canvas you did with the words to O Holy Night. Can I order one similar to that? How much do you charge?

Michelle Viera - I was wondering about your font. Have you created a downloadable font? I love it!
Thanks
Michelle

Kari - hi – I just saw a beautiful picture (on Pinterest) of an O Holy Night picture that you did. Do you sell things like that on your website? thanks

pam hernandez - I just wanted to let you know that I think your work is amazing and inspiring. It’s everything I wish that I had done when I was younger (frankly, I’m probably old enough to be your mom) and hope to do when I retire. Wonderfully creative, clever…really, really, great. Everything about your site reminds me of me (although I think you are much, much cuter!)
Good for you.
In the meantime, I’m sincerely glad to have discovered you and your work.
Blessings to you and your growing family.

Eliza - Hey Lindsay,

I love your lettering! I am very interesting in learning to write in a similar way. Do you give online classes? I saw that someone on Pinterest had mentioned that you gave classes, but couldn’t find anything on your website that said so. Please let me know! I’m ready to sign up!!

Thanks,
Eliza

Renee Royle - Lindsay, I am blown away by your skills! So “happy” looking on the envelope. I have been doing wedding invites since the 80′s, but my style is so “by the book.” Can you give me some advise on how to break out of the conventional method? I would like to learn to get a little more artsy in my lettering. I think it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but I want to try. Your work is amazing. ~Renee Royle

Laura J. - I found your website through a friend’s pin on Pinterest – I, too, love pretty paper (especially Crane’s) and beautiful lettering, but my lettering is a pretty basic italic design! I took a calligraphy class as a senior in high school in 1981 and I used an Osmiroid lever-fill style pen that I still have. Unfortunately, I’ve not been able to find any more of them. :( I loved those pens. I chuckled at your comment regarding the misspelled certificates. One time my mom had me write the names of my sister’s classmates on Christmas ornaments and then thought she’d “fix” the work with a clear spray coating. The lettering ran off the ornaments and I had to do them again. Another time I calligraphied an “Anglo-Saxon” newspaper my team created in English when we studied Beowulf. I almost died when a friend knocked over a soda that was sitting nearby and the black waterbased ink washed across the parchment like a grey tidal wave. I look forward to coming back and reading more of your blog! :)

keely - Hello Lindsay!
My friend Rachel showed me your handwriting (which I love!!) on Pinterest and I have a question. I did the programs for my younger sisters wedding and addressed all invitations and thank you’s. How do you make your envelopes look like they have been painted on instead of written on? Is it all in the pen that is used or should I have used some sort of transfer type of paper over the envelope? With the programs, I wrote on a clearer type of paper over a lined page to make my lines look straight and readable. Do you have any other suggestions if I were to ever do that type of work again?
Thanks again and I am amazed with your style and think you are truly talented.

Do you make fonts to purchase for photoshop at all?

Thanks!

Amy - I just stumbled upon your “O Holy Night” piece that was featured in (I think it was your friend’s) house at Christmas. I saw last year you could download a pdf, but the link no longer works. Will you be offering it again? I can’t afford to buy the wall hanging in your shop, but would love to be able to print a smaller piece. Thanks!
